The investigation into the case of Ilmi Umerov has been completed

The deputy head of the Mejlis is accused of calling for separatism.

On March 1, 2017, the Federal Security Service of Russia for Crimea and Sevastopol completed the investigation of a criminal case initiated against Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Ilmi Umerov. This was announced by the defendant himself on his Facebook page. He proceeded to familiarize himself with the materials of the case.

Criminal case under Part 2 of Art. 280.1 of the Criminal Code (public calls to violate the territorial integrity of the Russian Federation using the media or the Internet) was initiated in May 2016 after Umerov spoke live on the ATP channel in Ukraine in March. He was elected a measure of restraint in the form of a written undertaking not to leave.

We consider it unlawful to persecute Crimean Tatars for calling for the return of Crimea to Ukraine: it is impossible to accuse people of separatism who did not recognize the annexation of one territory to another. We also note that from the point of view of international law, the question of the legality of the annexation of Crimea to Russia is not entirely clear, and the Crimean Tatars have the right to their point of view in this dispute.

Previously, criminal cases under Art. 280.1 of the Criminal Code were initiated against the owner of the ATR TV channel, the former Vice Prime Minister of the Crimean government, Lenur Islyamov , and the head of the Mejlis, Refat Chubarov . In addition, the Supreme Court of the Republic of Crimea issued a decision to ban the activities of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, recognizing it as an extremist organization, from our point of view, unlawfully.
