The ECHR registered a complaint from the director of the Library of Ukrainian Literature

The European Court of Human Rights registered the complaint of the Director of the Library of Ukrainian Literature Natalia Sharina. This was announced by human rights activist Alexander Peredruk on his Facebook page.

Sharina was detained in October 2015, at the same time the court decided to place her under house arrest, which was repeatedly extended. As part of the chosen preventive measure, she was banned from walking and using any means of communication throughout the year. According to Peredruk, the court did not substantiate the need for house arrest.

“Sharina also believes that the absolute prohibition of the right to receive and send written and electronic correspondence, as well as the impossibility of taking walks for a long period, interferes with her rights guaranteed by the Convention, the restriction of which was not necessary in a democratic society. At the same time, the Russian court, extending the arrest, did not argue in any way the need to maintain these restrictions, ”the lawyer explained.

Natalya Sharina is accused of inciting hatred or enmity on ethnic grounds using her official position (Article 282 of the Criminal Code) and embezzlement on an especially large scale (Part 3 of Article 160 of the Criminal Code). According to the investigation, in 2011-2015, Sharina distributed a book by UNA-UNSO leader Dmitro Korchinsky, which was recognized as extremist material, and also conducted “anti-Russian and anti-Russian propaganda” with the help of other printed materials. Sharina was charged with embezzlement later: she allegedly paid for the services of lawyers from budget funds and fictitiously hired two lawyers.
