The Strasbourg court will consider the complaint of the Astrakhan nationalist.
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in March 2017 registered the complaint of the Astrakhan nationalist Igor Stenin against the sentence under Part 2 of Art. 280 of the Criminal Code (public calls for the implementation of extremist activities via the Internet).
On May 16, 2016, the leader of the Russian Astrakhan movement, Stenin, was sentenced to two years in a penal colony. He was found guilty of posting on the social network VKontakte under the pseudonym "Ingvar Stefan" an entry on the topic of the war in Ukraine; he was also charged with the comment of another user, which the investigation mistakenly took for a repost. In July, the regional court upheld the verdict. In November, Stenin was transferred to a general regime colony due to violations of discipline. The human rights center "Memorial" recognized Stenin as being persecuted for political reasons.
In February 2017, Stenin filed a complaint with the ECtHR. As his lawyer Natasha Dobreva noted, the charges were not based on the law, Stenin's conviction cannot be considered necessary in a democratic society, and the court chose too harsh a sentence.
From our point of view, the short note featured in the criminal case calling for the destruction of the " Kremlin occupiers " cannot be considered a call for extremist activity. We wrote more about our position on this case here .
