Putin thanked Israel for his position on Soviet monuments

Russian President Vladimir Putin thanked Israel for condemning the demolition of monuments to Soviet soldiers. With such a statement, he made a meeting of the Presidential Council on interethnic relations, Gazeta.ru reports .

“We are grateful to those who in Israel give the correct historical assessments to all these events, condemn the demolition of monuments to Soviet soldiers,” Putin said.

Earlier, the State Duma and the Knesset of Israel made a statement in connection with an insult to the memory of the Soviet soldiers-liberators and victims of the Holocaust in response to the law on the demolition of monuments in Poland.

The day before, the Poland Foreign Ministry said that the law on the demolition of Soviet monuments was aimed at “tearing with the symbols of the totalitarian regime” and would not affect the burial place of Soviet soldiers.

“Poland has always shown due respect and concern for the graves of all fallen soldiers, prisoners of war and interned, regardless of their citizenship or circumstances in which they arrived in Poland. The same applies to the graves of Russian and Soviet soldiers. Such behavior is part of the Polish national tradition, ”the ministry said in a statement.

On June 22, the Poland Diets adopted amendments to the law on decommunization, according to which about 500 monuments “glorifying communism” will be demolished.

Monuments will be dismantled after consultations with the Institute of National Memory, while the law will not affect objects installed in cemeteries and not put up for public viewing.
