
The United States does not consider the results of the past referendum on the independence of Iraqi Kurdistan legitimate. This is stated in a statement by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Interfax reports .
“The United States does not recognize the referendum conducted by the Kurdistan by the Kurdistan regional government. Voting and its results are not withstanding critics from the point of view of legitimacy, and we continue to maintain a single, federal, democratic and prosperous Iraq, ”the statement said.
The statement emphasizes that the United States is concerned about the negative consequences of "this one -sided step."
“The struggle against the IG is not over, extremist groups are hoping to take advantage of instability and disagreements. We urge our Iraqi partners to focus on the fight against IG, ”the Secretary of State says.
The referendum on the independence of Iraqi Kurdistan took place on September 25. 92.73% of voters voted for his independence.
