Angara region: A maniac from the police admitted in another 60 murders

Former policeman from Angarsk Mikhail Popkov admitted to another 60 murders, the Investigative Committee of the region reports . In total, from 1992 to 2010, he committed in Angarsk, Irkutsk, Usol-Sibirsky and areas at least 84 murders. The victims of Popkov were women of different positions in society, aged 16 to 40 years, and one man who worked in the police.

For 22 murders and 2 attempts on murders in January 2015, the Irkutsk Regional Court had already sentenced Popkov to life imprisonment. Later, investigators managed to disclose another 60 crimes committed by a former policeman. According to the police, today the true motive for the crimes of the serial killer maniac is established. Earlier, the colleagues of the maniac, who worked in the mid-90s as an assistant to the operational duty officer in the central department of the internal affairs of Angarsk, said that he could provoke his wife's betrayal for the murders of women.

In the late 90s, investigator Nikolai Kitaev, known for caught the Irkutsk maniac Vasily Kulik, was close to Popkov, reporting to the leadership about the list of suspects, among whom were several police officers, including the hangar resident. The regional prosecutor Anatoly Merzlyakov, according to Kitaev, forbade reporting on the results of the investigation to Moscow and the case was stopped for another 5 years.

According to experts, Popkov never suffered from a chronic mental disorder, temporary mental disorder, dementia or other psyche diseases. He realized the social danger of his actions and could lead them.

Popkov’s criminal case, the volume of which amounted to 322 volumes, will be sent to court in the near future.
