Ironite exhibition of modern design opened in Novosibirsk
Exhibition "New Olds. Classics and innovations in design ”from Goethe-Institute opened in the Novosibirsk Art Museum. The exposition from European designers is supplemented by objects created by local artists: a foam plate pseudo -rod from Hamburg is combined with Siberian gypsum Lenin.
The New Olds exhibition, exploring the idea of “new” and “old” in objective design, opened in Novosibirsk on February 9. The project was organized by the Institute of Relations with the foreign countries of the IFA and the Goethe-Institute.
“I don’t know what expectations you came to an exhibition of modern design. Perhaps you expected to see Adidas sneakers, Bosch household appliances or Porsche car, ”joined the director of the Goethe-Institute in Novosibirsk Per Brandt. “But here are not the objects that have some consumer value, but rather objects that give us the opportunity to think, art objects, works that give us the opportunity to understand what traditions are and how they are linked to our society now.”
The project, Brandt believes, is very suitable for Novosibirsk, who has undergone an incredible number of transformations in a short period of time and combines many styles. “Does this mean that we want to have only new in the house or - nostalgically - only the old? In my opinion, this exhibition gives an idea of how, playfully, to unite the old and new, ”the director of the Goethe-Institute emphasized.
The curator of the exhibition Folker Albus, designer, architect, professor of the State University of Arts and Design in Karlsruhe (Germany) spent a week before the opening in Novosibirsk and was very inspired by snow, which rarely sees at home: “I was also glad to see old wooden houses, but my heart was bleeding from how unexpected and recede into the background.”
He presented this exhibition in Russia for the fourth time. The exposition includes about 45 items from European and 10 items from local designers and artists.
The cabinet presented in the first hall is an example of how modern young people think, Folker Albus said: they do not fold everything carefully on the shelves, and often scatter their things and are prone to breeding a mess. The wardrobe looks wooden, monolithic and roomy, but, in fact, it is made of foam, into which you can simply stick things. Thus, they all find themselves in sight, and it is clear that there are not so many of them, the curator explained.

Separately, he noted the figurines of the Svetlenin, Rastu-Lenin and Lenin-Gagarin's work of the Novosibirsk artist Mayana Nasbullova, who organically fit into the modern ironic European design, since Lenin is part of the durable culture.
“Goethe-Institute himself offered the curator my works from the project“ Lenin for the Soul ”. He looked at them already in Novosibirsk, he liked everything, they absolutely fell into the concept of “old in a new way” or vice versa. I made and brought a dozen figurines, we selected three pieces, all white. Albus did not want to go to the steep irony and did not want to offend anyone, he chose those works that, in his opinion, did not mock the image of Lenin, ”the artist told Taiga.info. - For me it was an insight that this project could be part of the design exhibition. In this context, it turned out that this traditional, in general, souvenir thing is more related to design than art. ”
The exhibition will last at the Novosibirsk Art Museum until April 8.
