This week, Yekaterinburg unexpectedly became the center of protest activity in Russia. This may seem strange, but statistics show: neither the Sverdlovsk region nor its capital in the foreseeable past was one of the protest regions and did not stand out against the all -Russian background. • In the last report of the Committee of Civil Initiatives (KGI), Alexei Kudrin about protest moods in the Yekaterinburg regions and the Sverdlovsk region are not even mentioned. In the ratings of the St. Petersburg Politics Foundation, the Sverdlovsk region before the start of protests against the church of St. Catherine invariably found herself in the category of regions with high stability. The only protest rating in which the region appears is the All-Russian protests of the Center for Economic and Political Reforms (CEPR), but even there, in the top 10 regions in the number of protests, it is in 8th place, inferior to neighboring Chelyabinsk and Orenburg regions.
• The non -outstanding protest activity is confirmed by the results of federal and regional elections in which the power in Yekaterinburg has not failed in recent years. In 2018, Vladimir Putin received 74.6%in the Sverdlovsk region, 74.8%in Yekaterinburg with all -Russian all -Russian. The turnout in Yekaterinburg (59.7%) was exactly the same as in Moscow (59.95%). In stocks against the construction of the church in the square, which is sponsored by the two most famous city billionaires Igor Altushkin and Andrei Kozitsyn, almost all the most popular subjects of 2018 protest according to the KGI version (not counting protests against pension reform). This is dissatisfaction with politicians, including local self -government (24.2%of protest shares), the actions of the authorities in the field of humanitarian problems, culture (11.6%), urban environment (11.3%), as well as the actions of entrepreneurs (9.2%). About the same, the agenda of the “new protest” of the fourth period of Vladimir Putin, political scientist Konstantin Haaza in today's “Vedomosti” describes : “New national projects are construction, ecology, urban development, and people are“ new oil ”, so the authorities themselves will run into conflict.” A slowly smoldering source of discontent for this protest is the stagnation of the economy and the falling of the population falling for the fifth year. In Yekaterinburg, by the way, in 2018 they fell by 3%-more than on average in Russia (-0.2%).
