Former President of Egypt Muhammad Mursi died in Cairo at the age of 67. Mursi became bad after the court hearing, at which he was charged with espionage. In 2015, the former president was sentenced to death, accusing “inciting to violence and feud” and terrorism, but later changing the punishment for life imprisonment. The neighboring east specialist, international journalist Yuri Matsarsky, remembered for The Insider, what role Muhammad Mursi played for Egypt.
Before the 2011 revolution, Mursi was not a noticeable political player. He brought him to power compromises, to which the Muslim Brothers went after Mubarak was overthrown. If the situation once brought to power to power, then it looks like this: the military who acted as intermediaries during the transit of the authorities promised not to touch the “brothers” if they did not lead their recognizable and popular leaders into the policy. Mursi was not a successful leader.
Perhaps he simply did not have time to become them. But it must be remembered that under Mursi with the Egyptian economy was not everything in order, relations with neighbors began to deteriorate (primarily with Israel), and some blame Mursi in the fact that with him in the country, attacks on Shiites and Christians began. However, these attacks happened before, and Mursi himself tried to become the president of all the Egyptians, not only the “brothers” and sympathizers with them - he even defiantly left the party.
I personally did not have a chance to meet with Mursi himself, but there were situations directly related to him. Twice I came across as-Sisi, who overthrew him. The first time is on Tahrir, where al-Sisi came to inspect the troops during the demonstrations of 2013, as a supporter of Mursi, appointed by him by the head of the Armed Forces of Egypt. The second time-after the arrest of the president and the execution of his supporters, when As-Sisi spoke in the center of Cairo, telling that terrorists had made his way into power, and the army won them. The second revolution (or revolution) could become the last, the eyewitness of which I was. After the arrest of Mursi, his supporters from the Muslim Brothers defeated the camp and near the military base, on the territory of which the president was held for some time. At this base, we were on duty in turn with my Egyptian colleague Ahmed Samir asseman. It was on his duty that the camp was shot by the military, Ahmed was killed by one of the first.
