
The permanent representative of Argentina in Vienna Rafael Grossy was elected general director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This was reported by the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation at international organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov.
The General Director of the Magate selects the Council of Management Organization. Then his candidacy is approved by the General Conference at which all states are represented.
Four candidates claimed this post: Grossy, ex-representative of Romania, acting General Director Cornel Ferutse, as well as the executive secretary of the preparatory commission of the organization of the Treaty on a comprehensive prohibition of nuclear tests, Lassina GROBO and representative of Slovakia Martha Zhakova. In the final stage of the election of the general director, Ferutse and Grossy entered. The candidate required 2/3 votes to win.
In July, the predecessor of Grossy, the Japanese diplomat of Yukia Amano died in the 73rd year of his life.
Amano has been the post of head of the IAEA since 2009. Prior to this, he was a diplomat and international public servants of the United Nations and its units, and held various posts in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He is the fifth leader of the agency in history.
