
For the “life cycle” of ordinary white cotton t -shirt, 1670 liters of fresh water are spent and harmful substances are produced in the equivalent of 3.7 kg of carbon dioxide. This is evidenced by the study of scientists from the Berlin Technical University, which is cited by Bild.
The object of study of researchers was an ordinary white cotton T -shirt, which was produced outside Europe, bought and worn in Germany and washed conditionally 44 times during wearing. For all the time of its use, substances harmful to the environment are released, corresponding to 3.7 kg of carbon dioxide (CO2). More than half of the greenhouse potential of the T -shirt falls on its washing.
At the same time, for the production of a T -shirt, it is necessary to spend significant volumes of water. So, for the production of raw materials (in this case, cotton) is required 1370 liters, it will take another 55 liters from it to make a T -shirt. Another 221 liter of water is necessary for washing and 17 liters of water - for drying a T -shirt. The calculations also took into account the water necessary for the supply of electricity.
To reduce the environmental harm of the T -shirt, the authors of the study advise to wash the product at low temperature in order to avoid unnecessary energy of energy, as well as drying the T -shirt not in the washing machine, but in natural conditions.
