Good evening,
This is Meduza's mailing list about the coronavirus during the pandemic. It comes out on weekdays instead of Evening Medusa. If this letter was sent to you by someone you know and you have not yet subscribed to the mailing list, subscribe here .
In Russia, 5642 new cases of the disease were detected (about the same as in the previous day). In total - more than 52 thousand cases of infection. 51 people died with coronavirus. In Moscow, a doctor from War Veterans Hospital No. 3, which was adapted for a coronavirus hospital, and the rector of the Yelokhov Cathedral , one of the main Orthodox churches in Russia, died. During the day, 427 people recovered. In Moscow, three people recovered after receiving plasma with antibodies to coronavirus.
Here is a map with data for Russia and a table with the latest data by region.
More than 170,000 people have died from the coronavirus worldwide. According to The New York Times, this data is also incomplete: journalists analyzed mortality data in several countries (not including Russia) and found that at least 28,000 deaths may not be taken into account .
In Moscow, all those who caught a cold were ordered to stay at home. Those who live with them were forbidden to use transport - or rather, you can go, but only to the hospital. You can also take out the trash, walk with the animals and walk to the nearest store. People with a cold should not go out .
We spoke with doctors who treat people with COVID-19. The situation differs from hospital to hospital: somewhere there is all the necessary protection, somewhere masks are sewn by themselves. But with testing for coronavirus , problems seem to be everywhere .
“I can’t speak for everyone, but I have such fears: I’m scared not to cope, to let someone down. If it doesn’t work out, if I can’t emotionally, it will be physically difficult for me. For some reason, I am not afraid for myself: I consider myself a healthy, young, somatically unburdened person. I hope that even if I get infected, it will not be hard for me to proceed. So far, we have all the doctors in the ranks, but we are not being tested. In general, they don’t say anything about it, ”says Marina from Moscow.
“Pap smears were my own initiative. In general, doctors who work with such patients should be tested weekly, but we don’t have this,” confirms Arkady from the Moscow region.
“We are considered to be well off,” says a doctor from Tyumen. But we don't have tests. We take a patient without a test and without a CT scan. Many are operated on the next day. Let's say the patient is severe, got into intensive care after surgery for another week. And in a week, he may suddenly begin a clinic of viral pneumonia. What to do then? We are all afraid – both the leadership and the doctors.”
🎙 We cover the coronavirus pandemic not only on the website and in this newsletter, but also in the daily What Happened podcast. In it, we tell the stories of people who have survived the coronavirus . There, NES Rector Ruben Enikolopov explains why the current crisis is the worst of all in recent history, and political scientist Andrei Kolesnikov explains why Vladimir Putin has failed to capitalize on the pandemic . We tell how quarantine is going through are coping with the crisis in Sweden, Spain and the USA, how charitable foundations and cultural institutions , and what the world will be like when everyone defeats the coronavirus.
Oil prices have collapsed in the US. Very briefly: due to the coronavirus, enterprises have stopped working around the world, so the demand for oil has fallen - especially for the one that needs to be taken from the manufacturer right now. A slightly more detailed explanation is here .
Leading economists reviewed the government's proposals to rescue the Russian economy. The main complaint is that the authorities are not ready to spend enough money to support businesses and residents of the country.
Donald Trump has threatened to freeze immigration to the US. It's unclear what this means, as there are no official details other than his tweet. NYT sources say Trump could ban green cards and work visas. According to Trump, the immigration freeze is needed to protect "GREAT American citizens" from competition for jobs .
PS There isn't a lot of good news in this mailing list, so let us know what's going on with you while the coronavirus is around. And we will publish one story in each letter.
Here is what a reader Valentina wrote to us:
A week ago, my husband and I decided to adopt a cat from a shelter. It turns out that many animal shelters were closed for quarantine, and volunteers took the animals home from there to feed and care for them. Our kitty was fostered by an elderly woman who adopted as many as eight animals! So now is a great time to get a pet - this will help the volunteers, and there will be new entertainment for you within the four walls! All the best :)
Hooray for you! Congratulations on your new friend. Tell me what they called it 🐈
