“They wanted a positive agenda for the election of the governor, and it flared up in the NAO.” How residents of the Nenets district protest against a merger with the Arkhangelsk region

The heads of the Arkhangelsk region and the Nenets Autonomous Okrug (NAO) Alexander Tsybulsky and Yuri Beesodny signed on May 13 signed a memorandum of the unification of the regions. Residents of the NAO do not agree with this decision. Protestes are held in the region, pickets are arranged by both schoolchildren and local deputies. Every evening, the inhabitants of Naryan-Mar are singing the anthem of the district on Lenin Square. On the VKontakte social network, a petition against the unification collected more than 10 thousand signatures in ten days.

The special correspondent of Medusa Andrei Peretsev went to the Nenets Autonomous Okrug and found out how the calm northern region turned into a hot point in a few days. Andrei’s report on Medusa on May 27, and the next day, the secretary of the United Russia General Council Andrei Turchak announced that in 2020 there would be no referendum on the unification.
