
The US Navy soldier was arrested in Portsmut on suspicion of transferring secret information to a Russian citizen. It is reported by The Virginian-Pilot.
According to the publication, the military man is called Charles Briggs, he served as the foreman of the fleet and was engaged in the sector of information and technologies in the Naval Medical Center of the Portsmouth. He is charged with the unauthorized spread of secret defense information obtained from the government computer. The court documents do not disclose what kind of information he provided to the Russian.
According to the investigation, Briggs used a service computer to receive secret information on January 9, 2019 and realized that this information could be used to “cause damage to the United States or benefit a foreign citizen”. At that time, he was at the Offott air base in Nepobraska.
According to the authorities, from October 2018 to January 2019, he had access to information regarding national defense. It is also noted that Briggs did not report his connections with a Russian citizen and tried to hide his trip to Serbia during a vacation in 2018. He gave false information that he remained at that time in the state of Nebraska.
Currently, the soldier is in custody. Next week he will appear in front of a military tribunal.
