Chinese Huawei in the second quarter became the world leader in the supply of smartphones, beating the South Korean Samsung. For the last ten years, the leadership position has alternately belonged to either Samsung or Apple.
Huawei owes its leadership not to outpacing growth, but to a smaller drop in sales during the coronavirus crisis. The Chinese company reduced quarterly sales by 5%, to 55.8 million devices, Samsung - by 30%, to 53.7 million.
Huawei took full advantage of the outstripping recovery of the Chinese economy - before the coronavirus, such a result would not have been possible, the researchers note.
The company's sanctions problems in the US have not gone away: if its quarterly deliveries within China increased by 8%, then exports decreased by 27%.
