On the night of November 4, 2020, unknown persons set fire to a worship cross in the village of Uzyan, Beloretsk district of Bashkiria.
The act of vandalism was preceded by the appearance on YouTube of a video by local activist Ramila Saitova calling for a people’s gathering (yiyyn) to, in particular, consider the issue of “demolition of all crosses in the Urals.”
According to the activist, the cross in Uzyan was installed illegally and contrary to the constitution of the republic, which proclaims Bashkortostan a secular state.
The cross was installed in 2016 on the site of the former Trinity Church. The initiators were village residents who collected more than 400 signatures for the installation.
Let us remind you that a resident of this village, Yavdat Zainyshev, tried to challenge the legality of the installation of the cross.
Later, a case was brought against R. Saitova for public calls for extremism.
