On December 29, 2020, a case was initiated against the former schema-abbot Sergius (Romanov) under Part 3 of Art. 110.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (on inducement to suicide). Previously, cases had already been brought against him under Part 3 of Article 148 (violation of the right to freedom of conscience and religion) and Art. 330 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (arbitrariness).
Case under Part 3 of Art. 101.1 of the Criminal Code was initiated after an appeal from the Commissioner for Children’s Rights in the Sverdlovsk Region, Igor Morokov, with a request to conduct an investigation into the appearance of the video “For the faith of Christ we stand to death,” in which Fr. During his sermon, Sergius calls for “going to the cross for Russia.” Among the listening parishioners were children.
On December 29, the Basmanny Court of Moscow concluded Fr. Sergius was placed in custody for a period of two months.
On January 11, 2021 it became known that Fr. Sergius, as a sign of protest against criminal prosecution, went on a dry hunger strike in the pre-trial detention center. According to member of the Moscow Public Monitoring Commission Eva Merkacheva, he stopped eating on December 30.
January 15 Fr. Sergius announced the end of the hunger strike. According to his lawyer Svetlana Gerasimova, it was not a hunger strike, but a fast. On January 26, 2021, it became known that the defense’s appeal against the arrest of the ex-abbot will be considered on February 8.
On January 27, 2021, it became known that the Basmanny Court of Moscow rejected the defense’s complaint about the investigative actions on the night of the arrest of the former schema-abbot (mainly about night interrogations). On February 8, 2021, the Moscow City Court recognized the arrest of the former schema-abbot Sergius (Romanov) as legal. He will remain in custody until February 28.
On February 25, the Basmanny Court of Moscow again extended the detention of ex-schema-hegumen Sergius (Romanov) until May 28, 2021. On March 1, 2021, it became known that the defense again appealed the arrest of the former schema-abbot.
On April 5, 2021, the Moscow City Court upheld the decision of the Basmanny District Court to extend the arrest until May 28. On May 26, the Basmanny Court extended the detention of ex-schema-abbot Sergius for another month - until June 21. On May 28, 2021, the defense appealed the court's decision to extend the arrest.
On June 7, 2021, it became known that the Moscow City Court extended the detention of ex-schema-abbot Sergius until August 29, 2021.
