More than 2500 mathematicians from 15 countries demand to free their colleague-political prisoner Azat Miftakhov

According to the "New", the graduate student of Moscow State University Azat Miftakhov was detained by law enforcement agencies in February 2019. First, he was accused of the manufacture of explosives (Article 223.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). However, the prosecution did not even have indirect evidence to achieve the arrest of Miftakhov, and the Balashin court freed the young man. Miftakhov did not deny his involvement in the movement "People's Self -Defense". He found a train ticket to Belarus, and regarded it as an attempt to hide from the investigation. As a result, the graduate student was arrested.

Recall that on the night of January 31, 2018, several young people broke the window of the United Russia office and threw a smoke bomb inside. Four suspects (Elena Gorban, Andrei Heler, Alexei Kabuidze and Svyatoslav Rechkalov) were installed in hot pursuit and detained in February 2018. Young people were interrogated and released on a recognizance not to leave. And only a year later, in February 2019, another participant appeared in the case. The prosecution introduced a certain secret witness to the court, who remembered Azat "on expressive eyebrows." For which they pulled him to the matter and hid him behind bars.

During his speech in the debate of the parties held on December 23, 2020, the representative of the prosecutor's office demanded for Miftakhov six years in prison. In her speech, the state prosecutor rested that the mathematician is a member of an extremist organization that “sets its goal for a violent change in power according to the scenarios of color revolutions ...”.

Throughout the preliminary, and then judicial investigation, Miftakhov declared his innocence and refused to admit his guilt. His words are confirmed by the testimony of Gorban, who stated that on January 31, 2018 there was no Azat with them. They partially pleaded guilty, and the prosecution requested conditional terms for them. Two more accused - Kaboidze and Rechkalov - left Russia and, most likely, will be put on the international wanted list.

In his last word, Miftakhov again stated that he was in anarchic movement, but did not take part in the crime incriminated to him.

In addition, Azat thanked all the people and colleagues who acted in his defense. He is especially grateful to the international mathematical community, which questioned the feasibility of conducting the International Mathematical Congress in 2022 in St. Petersburg.

“The International Mathematical Congress takes place once every four years, and this is a significant event in the world scientific community,” Anatoly Vershik explained to the new. - Petersburg competed for the right to accept Congress with Paris, and the members of the executive committee were inclined towards France.
