EC accused Poland and Hungary of violating the standards of democracy inherent in the countries of the European Union

The European commission criticized Hungary and Poland for violating the basic principles of democratic freedoms, follows from the report published on the organization’s website.

In particular, the document emphasizes that Hungary and Poland limit the freedom of the media and prevent the free activity of the judicial system, which should be independent by definition.

In addition, the text of the report states that Poland does not comply with standards for the fight against corruption and the system of checks and counterweights.

The Deputy Chairman of the European Commission, Vera Yurov, responsible for the policy of preserving European values ​​and transparency, demanded that Poland have reported on compliance with the legal norms of the EU within a month. Otherwise, as Yurova said, large penalties will be applied to Warsaw.

“Poland must inform the EC on the measures that she took in this direction by August 16. If this does not happen, EC will apply to the European Justice Court about the imposition of financial penalties, and also begin its own procedure for imposing financial sanctions against Poland as part of the European procedure for eliminating violations, ”she explained.

According to the requirements of the EC, Poland must in the shortest possible time cancel the provisions of the judicial reform carried out by representatives of the Law and Justice party, but Warsaw for a long time refuses to follow this decision of the European Union.

According to Poland Prime Minister Mateusz Moravetsky, the current situation is an example of the dispute “between the courts of different political systems”.

“It seems to me that the Constitution of Poland is considered the highest legal act. And the Court of the European Union allows disputes in the matter that is the competence of the European Union, ”he said.
