CNN: The United States can expand sanctions against Belarus on the anniversary of the election in the country

The United States plans to introduce new sanctions against Belarus on the backdrop of the ongoing repressions by Alexander Lukashenko on August 9, CNN reports with reference to a source in Congress. A year ago, on this day, the presidential election took place in Belarus, after which mass protests began in the country.

CNN does not have data on what sanctions Washington prepares, but the report notes that the leader of the Belarusian opposition Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, who recently visited the United States, reported to the Joe Biden administration a specific list of restrictions on the Lukashenko administration, which she considers necessary.

On July 28, US President Biden met with Tikhanovskaya. Prior to this, she met with the presidential adviser to National Security, Jake Sullivan and employees of the State Department. Advisor to the Tikhanov Franak Vyachorka said that the State Department’s employees indicated the willingness to expand sanctions against Belarusian sectors of oil products and potassium fertilizers.
