Schwartzman was born in 1920 in Minsk, in 1941 he graduated from the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (now the Academy of Arts), during the war he worked at the Tokar factory in Chelyabinsk, and since 1948 he worked at Soyuzmultfilm.

The owner of the Order of Alexander Nevsky and the medal “For the Defense of Leningrad”, the title of Honored Artist of the RSFSR and People's Artist of the Russian Federation. In 2017, he was awarded the President of Russia for contribution to the development of domestic animated art.
