Google fired engineer Blake Lemun, who previously made claims about the rationality of the Lamda algorithm, which generates speech.
Lemun, who worked in the company for seven years, was supposed to establish whether there is a manifestation of hatred or discrimination in the statements of Lamda. During the correspondence with the algorithm, as follows from the publications about Lemayn, he came to the conclusion that the program is reasonable and capable of perceiving and expressing thoughts and feelings.
According to an engineer who in early June spoke about his story The Washington Post , Lamda involved him in a conversation about his own rights and his personality. The algorithm also convinced him in a conversation about the third law of Robotics Isaac Azimov : when Lemun noticed that under this law the robot is similar to a “mechanical slave”, Lamda asked if he was seeing the difference between a slave and a butler. The engineer replied that they were paying the butler, but Lamda retorted that he did not need money. According to Lemunn, he impressed him "this level of awareness about his own needs."
Lemun turned to journalists after the company sent him on a forced vacation. This was preceded by several “aggressive”, as the Washington Post writes, actions on his part. In April, Lemun sent a document to the Google leadership entitled “Is the Lamda?”, And also invited a lawyer who was supposed to represent the interests of the algorithm, and contacted the Law Committee of the House of Representatives of the US Congress in order to report on the unethical actions of Google. According to Lemun, Google researchers should receive Lamda's consent before conducting an experiment with him, writes The Verge.

Google was called the reason for the dismissal of the engineer that he repeatedly violated the rules for protecting corporate data. The company also stated that Blake Lemun’s statements about the rationality of the Lamda algorithm were repeatedly checked and did not find any confirmation to them.
The representative of the corporation emphasized that although some researchers think about the possibility of creating reasonable artificial intelligence in the future, "it makes no sense to do this, anthropomorphism of modern colloquial models that are not reasonable." “These systems imitate the types of phrases that are found in millions of sentences, and can chat on the most unusual topics,” he said.
Emily Bender, professor of linguistics from the University of Washington, noted in a conversation with The Washington Post that "cars can be thoughtlessly generating speech, but we have not yet learned how to imagine that this speech is worth the mind."
