Direct elections of the mayor were canceled in Novosibirsk

The Legislative Assembly of the Novosibirsk Region approved the bill, according to which direct elections of mayors will no longer be held in Novosibirsk and Science of Koltsovo, Interfax reports .

The accepted bill provides that the heads of the cities will choose representative bodies for a period of five years from the candidates will be presented by the competitive commission. The new rules will enter into force after the term of powers of the current mayors of Novosibirsk and Koltsovo - Anatoly Lokta and Nikolai Krasnikov, respectively, ends.

The elbow, elected for a second term in 2019, will leave his post in 2024. Krasnikov heads Koltsovo since 1991, the last time he re-elected in 2020, respectively, his term of office ends in 2025.

On the day of voting, a series of pickets took place at the Zabor -Assembly building of the Novosibirsk Region: activists protested against the cancellation of the mayor’s elections.

Today, direct elections of the heads of cities-administrative centers of regions have been preserved only in Khabarovsk, Anadyr, Abakan, Yakutsk and Ulan-Ude.
