At least 10 people died as a result of an explosion at the military base in the city of Sevare in Mali on April 22, AP reports with reference to the press service of the country's army. At this database, in particular, the mercenaries of the Wagner PMC are stationed.

Reuters writes that there were three explosions and that bombs were acted by suicide bombs. According to the agency, nine people died, 60 were injured, about 20 houses were destroyed. The authorities of the region claim that all the dead and victims were civilian. Locals told AP that in addition to the explosion they heard shooting. The agency also quotes the Mali government’s statement, which states that "three cars filled with explosives were destroyed by the fire of the army drone."

No one took responsibility for the terrorist attack, but a few days before the attack it was reported that part of the Mopti region, where the city of Sevare was located, took control of rebel groups associated with ISIS and al-Kadom. On Saturday, April 22, the Mali authorities said that the army destroyed the rebel base in the city of Bony, located in the same region.

Al-Jazira notes that at the military base in Sevare, which had an attack, there are Mali military personnel, UN peacekeepers and mercenaries of the Wagner PMC. It was the latter, most likely, that was the goal of the attack, said the expert of the African Center for Democracy and Development Lassan Wedraogo Vedraogo. According to him, it is impossible to say exactly which group arranged a terrorist attack, but her character indicates "Jamaat Nasr al-Islam Val Muslim." Representatives of this group recently expressed dissatisfaction with the presence of the Wagnerians in Mali.

Wagner's mercenaries appeared in Mali after the military junta seized power in the country in 2021. She uses the services of Wagnerians to combat rebel groups. It was also reported that the Russian PMC has interests in the field of mining at local deposits.

After the seizure of power by the junta and the emergence of the mercenaries of the PMC Wagner in the country, Sweden and France brought their military personnel from Mali. The French ambassador was also sent from the country.
