The decision to transfer the icon to the ROC was announced on May 15 Vladimir Putin. He said that this will be done "in response to numerous requests of the Orthodox believers."
On May 23, an expert meeting was held in the Tretyakov Gallery, during which experts came to the conclusion that it was impossible to transfer the icon of the Russian Orthodox Church.
“The“ Holy Trinity ”icon Andrei Rublev is not subject to issuing the Tretyakov Gallery outside the Trinity on June 4 of this year due to a complex and unstable state, as well as the unpredictable of the continuing process of negative changes. At the moment, the icon is in a restoration workshop in the process of emergency restoration of the monument. ”
The then head of the expert council of the Moscow Patriarchate for Church Art, Architecture and Restoration, Archpriest Leonid Kalinin, said that the Russian Orthodox Church is understanding this decision. However, soon Patriarch Kirill removed Kalinin from his post with the wording “for obstruction” to transfer the “trinity” of Rublev to the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. After that, Kalinin got to the hospital with a heart attack.
On May 24, members of the Commission on Culture of the Ancient and Medieval Russia of the Scientific Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences “History of World Culture” in a letter to the Minister of Culture Olga Lyubimova asked her not to allow the transfer of the icon, since the old monument would not withstand this transfer and will be destroyed. Experts emphasized that “masterpieces of Russian icon painting and national shrines should not be at risk,” and the fate of the “Trinity” cannot be resolved in a short time and without a balanced discussion with specialists.
On May 26, the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov said that the “Trinity” would be transferred to the Cathedral of Christ the Savior by June 4. The Ministry of Culture, in turn, assured that "the safety of the icon during transportation and exhibiting will be ensured by the most modern means."
