In Kazakhstan, an analogue of the register of "foreign agents" appeared. Journalists and independent media fell into it

In Kazakhstan, a list of people and organizations similar to the Russian Register of Foreign Agents appeared on the website of the State Revenue Committee on the evening of September 20. The full list of the person involved in the list is available in the interactive table.

The first publication of 240 people and organizations, including independent media, journalists, human rights organizations and NPOs.

The legislation of Kazakhstan has not yet imposed any restrictions on the defendants in the list.

The intention to create in Kazakhstan an analogue of the Russian register of “foreign agents”, journalists became aware of in March 2023 from the published order of the Minister of Finance of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Nekhulan Zhamaubaev. It was argued that "such a measure would increase the level of trust of citizens to the state and NGOs."

In the spring of 2022, the former Minister of Information and Public Development, Askar Umarov, said that journalists in Kazakhstan would not be persecuted and called the ranks of individual media to “foreign agents” “not quite our method”.
