Erdogan signed a protocol on Sweden’s entry into NATO and sent it to the Turkish parliament for ratification

The protocol on Sweden entered NATO was signed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, reports the Communications Department of the Presidential Administration of the Republic. Now it should be ratified in the Turkish parliament.

The consent of Erdogan to support Sweden's application for joining the Alliance was spoke of NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in July. This decision was made according to the results of negotiations with the Turkish leader, Prime Minister of Sweden Ulf Kristersson and the head of the European Council Charles Michel.

According to Stoltenberg, Erdogan promised “as soon as possible” to send a protocol on joining NATO to the parliament and ensure its ratification. Then it was expected that this could happen "in less than a week."

Finland and Sweden submitted applications for joining NATO after the start of Russia's full -scale invasion of Ukraine. On April 4, Finland officially became the 31st member of the North Atlantic Alliance, while the entry into NATO Sweden was inhibited by Turkey, which demanded from Stockholm the issuance of Kurdish refugees and Turkish opposition. In addition, the Turkish authorities, in order not to support Sweden’s application, used the story of the burning of the Qur'an (January 21, the Danish ultra -right politician Rasmus Paludan burned the Qur'an at the Turkish embassy in Stockholm).
