Great Britain is going to invest 300 million pounds (about $ 380 million) in the program for the production of modern nuclear fuel for the next generation of nuclear power plants, reports Reuters. This will allow the country to reduce dependence in this area on the Russian Federation.
We are talking about the production of fuel with a high content of low -enriched uranium (haleu, uranium with an enrichment of 20%). On an industrial scale, only Russia develops it so far. According to the British Ministry of Energy, this will allow "supplying the world to a specific type of nuclear fuel and even more isolate Putin's Russia."
The first company for its development should be launched in the early 2030s in North-West England. The project will be attended by companies of the EU countries, as well as the USA.
The development strategy of the nuclear industry of Great Britain involves the creation of small modular reactors (SMR). They are much cheaper than traditional ones and they are much easier to build. The only obstacle to the implementation of the plan is the availability of fuel for them.
Britain is one of the 20 countries that signed an agreement on an increase in the production of electricity at the expense of nuclear power plants, which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere.
