On March 26, 2024, the FSB reported that a terrorist attack was prevented at a humanitarian aid reception point in the Samara region, which was being prepared by a member of the Russian Volunteer Corps (RDK, recognized as terrorist in the Russian Federation and banned). During his arrest, RDK member Andrei Zhvakin (born in 1994) died due to a self-detonation of an explosive device, Interfax reports a FSB report.
The bomber was “collecting explosives and was supposed to organize an explosion at a humanitarian aid reception point” of one of the volunteer organizations, but began to run away during the arrest with a bomb in his hands, which eventually exploded.
According to the FSB, Zhvakin was recruited by the Ukrainian special service in September 2023 with the assistance of RDK activist Alexander Kudashev (born in 1982). During the search, department officials discovered a laboratory for the production of explosives, components for their production, as well as one ready-to-use improvised explosive device. And on the phone of the deceased, correspondence with the curator was found. A criminal case has been initiated under Part 1 of Art. 30 and paragraph “a”, part 2, art. 205 of the Criminal Code (preparation for a terrorist attack).
In January 2023, Zhvakin was sentenced to 25 hours of forced labor due to an action in support of political prisoners, which he agreed with the authorities. In 2022, he was detained in Moscow while picketing the trial of Ilya Yashin.
RDK press secretary Ilya Bogdanov told reporters that activist Andrei Zhvakin had nothing to do with RDK, adding that “ALL the terrorist attacks that are possible will be blamed on RDK.”
