On May 31, 2024, it became known that in one of the schools in the city of Mirny in Yakutia, an algebra teacher kicked a seventh-grader wearing a headscarf out of class.
The family of 14-year-old Alsu moved to Mirny from Tatarstan in 2023. When she entered the school, the principal and teachers did not complain about the girl wearing a hijab. She attended classes during the school term until the algebra and geometry teacher kicked her out of class for wearing a hijab. The parents who came to the school were told that the charter of the educational institution does not provide for wearing headwear in class, and they offered to transfer the girl to home schooling.
The family followed this advice, but Alsu's performance in algebra and geometry dropped sharply. The parents are sure that the teacher who kicked their daughter out of class continues to discriminate against her on religious grounds.
The girl's family intends to file a complaint with the prosecutor's office. The school refers to the charter.
