Uniper terminates the contract for gas supply from the Russian Federation. Companies awarded compensation of 13 billion euros for losses after explosions on the Northern Stream

The largest German gas importer Uniper announced the termination of its long -term contracts with Gazprom Export for the supply of Russian gas after a positive court decision.

The contract was supposed to operate until 2035. The declared annual supply of supplies on it was about 24 billion cubic meters of Russian gas.

In the summer of 2022, there was a reduction in pumping on the North Stream-1 pipeline due to problems with Siemens turbines at the Portovaya compressor station. In August, the pipeline supplies were completely stopped.

In September 2022, three of the four branches of the Northern Streams were blown up. Uniper then announced a violation of the contract and in November 2022 filed a lawsuit in the Stockholm Arbitration Court to Gazprom Export. The company was accused of losses from the gas shortage and estimated the costs of replacing Russian gas at € 11.6 billion.

The court made a positive decision and awarded UNPER to pay more than € 13 billion compensation for non -insistion of gas.

According to Michael Lewis, the UNPER CEO, the arbitration solution brings “legal clarity” for the company. Uniper plans to send the funds received from compensation for losses to the Federal Government of Germany.
