Biden endorses US Vice President Kamala Harris for the upcoming presidential election

Biden has endorsed US Vice President Kamala Harris' candidacy in the upcoming presidential election.

"I want to focus all my energy on serving as president for the remainder of my term. My first decision as the party's nominee in 2020 was to choose Kamala Harris as my vice president. And it was the best decision I made.

Today, I want to fully support and endorse Kamala to be our party's nominee this year. Democrats, it's time to unite and defeat Trump. Let's do it."

As The Guardian notes , Democrats are in for a tough time, as the candidate will have limited time to choose a running mate and compete with Trump and his vice presidential nominee, Ohio Senator J.D. Vance. On August 19, about 4,000 Democratic Party delegates will gather to choose a new candidate. The Wall Street Journal reported that US Vice President Kamala Harris is considered the most likely candidate to replace Biden if he drops out of the race. California Governor Gavin Newsom, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker were also named as potential options.

Harris, 59, who served as Biden’s vice president, has the most national visibility of any Democratic candidate, and delegates may view her as the safest bet with Election Day just four months away. One big selling point for Harris is finances, as she can spend money raised by Biden’s campaign on her own campaign, while other candidates likely won’t be able to tap into those funds, The Guardian reports. The president’s campaign had raised $91.6 million in cash as of the end of May, according to the newspaper.
