Russian and Ukrainian citizen sentenced to 8 years in case of confidential cooperation with Ukraine

Russian and Ukrainian citizen Petr Opalnik was sentenced to 8 years in prison in a case of confidential cooperation with Ukraine. The decision was made by the Novgorod Regional Court, SotaVision reports .

Opalnik was found guilty under articles on confidential cooperation with a foreign state and an attempt to organize a voluntary surrender.

The state prosecution requested 9 years of imprisonment for Opalnik. The case was heard behind closed doors.

Petro Opalnik was born in the Vinnytsia region of Ukraine. In 2011, he moved to live in Russia (he worked in the construction industry in the Novgorod region), and in 2022 he received Russian citizenship.

Opalnik was detained in January 2023 near his own home. According to investigators, he "incited mobilized personnel to commit treason by providing the enemy with information about the locations of Russian military units and formations, the theft and transfer of military equipment, and voluntary surrender." In March 2024, he was charged under the article on attempted organization of voluntary surrender.
