After the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Russians often abandoned the idea of having a child or postponed the birth of children due to a negative attitude to the political course of the country's leadership. This, as the Forbes magazine writes, says in the article “Reproductive intentions of Russians in 2022–2023: the role of subjective factors”, published by researchers from the Higher School of Economics. Among other common reasons for refusing to give birth to a negative emotional background and insufficient financial well -being.
During the study, scientists from the Higher School asked Russians who, a year earlier, announced plans to have children, whether their intentions changed. A typical respondent of the survey sample was a Russian marriage, which is working and living in a city in a two -room apartment. He evaluates his living conditions as good, and material condition as the average. His level of anxiety has increased over the past year, the level of welfare has decreased, while it supports the current political course of the Kremlin.
60% of these respondents, a year later, reported that they did not change their plans, about 21% decided to postpone the birth of children for one or two years or an indefinite period. And 9.5% of respondents completely abandon the intention to have children.
Among the reasons that the respondents who refused or postponed the birth of a child were more often than others were the macroeconomic and political situations, war and financial issues.

The article notes that ceteris paribus to the refusal of the birth of a child leads to a combination of physiological characteristics and attitude to current statelytics, especially in the field of family support. The respondents who decided to postpone the birth of children for an indefinite period explained this with a negative emotional background, family position, attitude to stateliness and their own financial situation.
At the same time, disagreement with the current Kremlin course increases the likelihood that the Russian will postpone the birth of children by 11 percentage points, the authors of the study noted.

It consists primarily in the legislative restriction of citizens' access to the abortion of pregnancy and the requirements to give birth more, which are regularly voiced by Russian officials at different levels.
On September 3, the chairman of the State Duma Committee on the Protection of the Family Protection Nina Ostanina called for a “demographic special operation” in Russia. Its goal, according to the deputy, should be an increase in the share of large families in Russia to 51%.
