Putin granted asylum to Bashar al-Assad and his family - Peskov

Vladimir Putin has provided asylum to Bashar al-Assad and his family, confirmed the press secretary of the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov. TASS reports this.

At the same time, according to him, there is currently no meeting with Assad on Putin’s schedule. Peskov also refused to answer the question when the politicians last met.

According to Peskov, it is premature to talk about maintaining Russian bases in Khmeimim and Tartus: “This is a subject for discussion with those who will lead Syria.”

After Bashar al-Assad resigned as president of Syria, he and his family flew to Russia, TASS previously reported , citing a source in the Kremlin:

“Assad and his family arrived in Moscow. Russia, based on humanitarian considerations, provided them with asylum.”

On the morning of December 8, representatives of rebel groups appeared live on Syrian national television, announcing that they had established control over Damascus. The Syrian army command announced to officers that Assad's 24-year reign was over. Prime Minister Muhammad Ghazi al-Jalali said he would remain in the country and would facilitate the transfer of power.
