This principle attracts foreigners who come to the United States in the hope that their children will receive American citizenship, even if the parents themselves are in the country illegally.

The idea of ​​abolishing automatic citizenship by birth has been discussed repeatedly in American politics. Its supporters argue that this will reduce the influx of illegal migrants.
