The head of the Yelenovskaya colony of the DPR, Sergei Evsyukov, died on the morning of December 9 in the center of Donetsk after a car explosion. Evsyukov’s wife, who was in the car, was seriously injured - her leg was torn off. The victim was taken to the hospital; doctors assess her condition as serious.
The explosion occurred near the intersection of Universitetskaya Street and Komsomolsky Prospekt. According to the preliminary version, a plastic with a capacity of about 100 g of TNT equivalent was placed under the bottom of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado car.
Sergei Evsyukov was previously accused by the Ukrainian authorities of involvement in the death of Ukrainian Armed Forces prisoners of war from the Azov battalion held in the Yelenovskaya colony. On July 29, 2022, an explosion in the colony killed 53 Ukrainian prisoners of war and injured another 130.
The so-called DPR authorities and the Russian Ministry of Defense stated that the attack on the colony was carried out by the Ukrainian side using the American HIMARS MLRS. The authors of the CNN investigation , who studied videos, photos, satellite images, as well as the work of criminologists and weapons experts, reported that the likelihood of a HIMARS missile strike on the colony is practically excluded.
The Ukrainian side claims that the explosion in Yelenovka was a terrorist attack organized by Russia to intimidate Western countries and disrupt arms supplies. Propagandists announced the “provocation” a month before the events, and shortly before the explosion, Ukrainian prisoners of war were transferred to hangars on the territory of the colony, where no one had previously been housed. Among those killed in the colony in 2022 were soldiers of the Azov battalion, whom, according to The Insider, no one was going to exchange. Surviving eyewitnesses spoke about this, including a former prisoner of the Yelenovskaya prison.
