Major General Eyal Zamir was appointed new chief of the General Staff DSACAL

The Major General of the reserve Eyal Zamir was appointed new chief of the General Staff for the UAC, by the decision of the Minister of Defense of Israel Katz and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, reports Jerusalim Post. In this post, he will replace the current head of the General Staff, Lieutenant General Herzi Ho-Levy.

The publication notes that Aeal Zamir has a rich track record in the highest military positions. Over the past two years, he served as the Director General of the Ministry of Defense, where he was responsible for international military cooperation and the increase in military potential. Prior to this, Zamir served as deputy head of the General Staff, commander of the Southern Military District and Military Secretary of the Prime Minister.

It is noted that in January 2023, Zamir was already close to his appointment to the post of head of the IDF, losing this position of Herzi Ha-Levy. Then the decision was made by the Minister of Defense Benny Ganz in the period when Netanyahu was temporarily not in power. In the current competition for the post of Zamir, the current deputy chief of the General Staff, Major General Amir Baram and the recently retired, Major General Tami Yadai.

Sources in the defense department note that calls to replace Ha-Levy with Zamir began to sound back in December both from political leadership and high-ranking military. Experts emphasize the importance of an early completion of the investigation of events on October 7 and the need to ensure a smooth transition period, despite the ongoing military operations.

In favor of the candidacy, Zamir played his versatile experience of managing work and the ability to effectively interact with political leadership, while maintaining independence in decision -making. Although some tried to connect him on October 7 because of the previous leadership of the Southern Military District, experts note that Zamir left this position back in 2018, long before the tragic events. Moreover, even as deputy chief of the General Staff, he warned about the insufficient number of infantry units to perform all defense tasks.

At the end of January, the current chief of the Israeli Defense General of the Israeli Defense Army General Herzi H-Levy said that he would resign in March this year. He leaves this post, "recognizing his responsibility for the failure of October 7" during the attack of the Hamas terrorists.
