The US President suspended 25% of duties on imports from Mexico on February 1 for a month, after a telephone conversation with the country's president Claudia Steinbaum. Steinbaum itself wrote about this on her page on Twitter (x).

In addition to the suspension of duties, the two countries agreed on the following decisions:

Mexico will send 10 thousand fighters of the National Guard to the northern border to combat drug smuggling, in particular, fentanyl;
The United States will fight the smuggling of weapons in Mexico;
Further work on security and trade issues will be carried out since today with both parties.

“We had a good conversation with President Trump, respectful of our relationship and sovereignty,” wrote Steinbaum.

On February 1, Donald Trump introduced 25% of import duties on all goods from Canada (except for energy carriers that were overlured by 10% duties). Similar decisions were made in relation to China and Mexico. Trump said this was done to combat drug trafficking and illegal migration. In response, the Canadian government announced that it would overlap 25% of the duties of a number of goods imported from the United States, and Ontario province refused contracts with American companies before the abolition of duties. President of Mexico Steinbaum immediately after the introduction of duties also promised to introduce “tariff and non -tariff measures in defense of the interests of Mexico” and strongly rejected all the accusations of cooperation between the Mexican government with drug cartels.
