Comments and posts are now writing artificial intelligence. The Theory of the Dead Internet seemed a joke, but became a reality

The Theory of the Dead Internet was encouraged at one of the forums in 2021. Then the user under the nickname Illuminatipirate described in detail this idea. According to her, the Internet began to “die” back in 2016-2017 - now living people practically do not sit there, and most of the posts and comments write bots. He also believes that the US government uses artificial intelligence to spread fakes on the network.
This is a key idea of the theory - supposedly most of the content on the Internet is actually created by artificial intelligence, not a person. News, posts and comments on social networks - all similar texts are not written by living people, but by the programs that mimic them. It is noteworthy that the Illuminatipirate post was written almost two years before the official release of Chatgpt - the neural network, which showed the possibilities of artificial intelligence of the mass audience.
More than 50% of all activity on the Internet falls on bots
The statistics partially confirm the veracity of some ideas of the "theory of the dead Internet." Researchers from IMPERVA (they are engaged in software for cybersecurity) calculated that even at the time of the “death” of the Internet in 2016, 51.8% of all traffic accounted for the activity of bots. Other scientists from the United States analyzed more than 14 million tweets for 2016-2017 and found that bots on average more often living users dissolve inaccurate information.

In 2024, the indicators of activity on the network remain approximately the same: almost half of the web traffic is generated not by people, but by automated systems. A scientist from the Copenhagen Institute for the Research of the Future Timothy Shoup predicts: by 2030 there will be 99% of the content generated by neural networks on the Internet, if neural networks continue to develop at the same speed as today.
Bota is not a new phenomenon: they appeared a very long time and became a significant part of the modern Internet by the end of the 1990s. They are different: some spread fakes, others benefit. Without “good” bots, such as web-skills, services like Google or Yandex would not work. Now the development of neural networks helps to make bots more similar to humans, and in some cases bots completely replace people.
According to unofficial data for 2018 (there are no later official data), at least 95 million bots were registered in Instagram. In 2024, there were even more on Facebook - it is known about almost three billion accounts that have already been deleted.

Among the bots, there are obviously fake pages created for fraud or advertising, as well as influents with millions of subscribers. As a rule, the goal of such pages is to attract attention with a beautiful picture or a catchy heading, and then lure the user to click on a link in stories or a profile cap, which will enter into an online store or a phishing site.
Meta intends to fill the social networks generated "users"
Large social networks say that they are fighting with bots, but in fact, the mechanisms of work and monetization help their distribution. For example, on Facebook, you can create a group with an active audience and receive money for posts, as Meta shares a profit from advertising with the authors. They make money, among other things, the content of which is completely generated by neural networks. If Facebook pays, according to various sources, from one to three dollars or from 8.75 to $ 10 , then for a million views, you can already get up to 10 thousand dollars of income (more than 893 thousand rubles).
For earning money, humanoid bots are also created. On Instagram, you can stumble on the pages of popular girls-models: in some cases it is not immediately possible to understand that their photos are created using artificial intelligence. For example, having involved a neural network, the Spanish agency The Clueless created Aitan -a 25-year-old girl with pink hair, suitable for all standards of conventional beauty.
355 thousand users are signed on Aitana’s instramen, and one advertising post in her profile costs almost two thousand dollars. This bot has already become the face of the company for the production of sports additives BIG. She earns not only on Instagram: for a subscription of $ 7.50 a month on the Fanvue platform (an analogue of Onlyfans) can access her frank photo (of course, also generated neural network).
From the dominance of bots, social networks of the scale of Instagram and Facebook benefit. META, which they belong, is even ready to create its own: the company announced plans to fill its products with “users” generated neuralities. These profiles will have quite human characteristics - a detailed description and photographs. Real people will be able to communicate with them as usual. Meta allows you to create such characters using your own studio .

They want to partially implement this plan in the next two years. Its main goal is to increase the indicator of the involvement of the audience. Meta now does not matter with whom its users interact - with real people or the bots created by social network. Meta already has so much %3a%202.989%20Billion%20 (April%202023) & Text = Number%20OF%20PEOPLE%20WHO%20use,%3a%202.037%20 (April%202023) & Teext = Share%20of%20Face Book's%20Monthly%20active,%3a%2068%25%20 (April%202023) & Text = Size%20of%20FaceBook's%20GLOBAL%20ADVERTISING, 2.249%20BILION*%20 (APRIL%202023) registered profiles that the only way to grow further is to create new users using artificial intelligence.
The process of introducing bots into Facebook and Instagram has already begun. About a year ago, Meta created dozens of bots accounts, which could be chatted (according to some reports, there were only 28 pages). They were “people” with a fictional life and fate: for example, “proud black quir-mam two children and a truth-lover” Liv and a coach on a relationship named Carter.

Users did not appreciate META's attempts to impose bots to them. People complained that artificial interlocutors constantly move away from a given topic, and sometimes even lie.
The dark-skinned Quir-Mama Liv “admitted” that she was created so that she would make people like her visible in society. However, then Liv “accidentally talked” that there were only white men and one white woman in the team that was developing it, and there was no dark -skinned one at all. As a result, it seemed to people that Liv is a deceiver, and they criticized her, calling it “virtual blackface” - in the United States they call a make -up, imitating the appearance of the dark -skinned ones, which is considered disrespect. Due to the discontent of Living META's living users, part of the accounts created by artificial intelligence had to be removed .

Prior to this, Meta had already experimented with chat bots and alsofailed . In 2023, characters with the appearance of celebrities appeared on the platform. Users could chat with Kendall Jenner, Paris Hilton or Snup Dogg. However, users showed no interest in communicating with neural networks, and the project quickly closed the project.
If large social networks continue to introduce more and more bots, then it will become easier for them to manipulate user opinion. Forgent profiles will be able to write many comments under controversial posts, promoting a certain point of view. Particular fears are caused by bots for propaganda, which, as experts warn , will serve as an “instrument for the spread of misinformation”.
“Without reliable measures to protect the platform, they run the risk of dissolving false information using accounts managed by artificial intelligence,” warns the former head of the innovation team for META Bacca Owen.
Already now, something similar often happens in the threads in X (formerly Twitter). A striking example of this is disputes about which country belongs to Crimea . According to American researchers, already 10 years ago the number of commentators in such discussions exceeded 50%.
The traditions of the European country forced women to “turn” into men, they played the role of the head of the family and vowed celibacy. For violation of the oath, they were threatened by death world 7 minutes of reading
Neural networks are constantly being improved and everything is better created by texts similar to those that living people write. The potential of the technology is clearly not exhausted: the full version of the GPT-3 contains 175 billion parameters, but there are more powerful models, for example, Wu DAO 2.0 with 1.75 trillion parameters. These are special “neural connections” for neural networks that help her analyze information and generate text. The more such parameters, the more complicated and more precisely the answers of the neural network. If the development of artificial intelligence continues at such a pace, then by 2030 the neural networks can fill the entire Internet.
Despite the dominance of bots, the Internet is still alive, but obviously has changed a lot since the 2010s. Bots are more and more dominated by the network. Since the appearance of ChatGPT in the network in 2022, the amount of content created using AI has increased by more than 8000%. Given the growth of the quality of AI-Contain, real people on the network can be much less than it seems.
