The Finnish scientist Susanna Hakekil made a significant breakthrough in topology - the section of mathematics, which studies the properties of geometric forms. Her work, performed together with Professor Pekka Pankka, was accepted for publication in one of the most prestigious mathematical magazines.
Hikekil found the answer to the question that in 1981 formulated the Soviet-French mathematician Mikhail Gromov. He was interested in whether any smooth, closed, flawless multidimensional form can always be obtained by stretching and distorting the flat space.
In 2019, a partial answer to this question was given by the mathematician Alexander Priwes, having built a four -dimensional counter example. Hikekil's work continues this direction, clarifying which spaces allow such display.
To explain the essence of her work to a wide audience, Haikkil used her hobby - knitting. On the public defense of the dissertation, she introduced a knitted model depicting a display of the plane to the sphere. According to the scientist, knitting is the easiest way to understand and present a topology in practice.
