The Basmanny District Court of Moscow in absentia sentenced the chief editor of Novaya Gazeta Europe Kirill Martynov. He was appointed 6 years in prison in the case of organizing the activities of an “unwanted” organization.
Martynov found guilty of organizing the activities of two “undesirable” organizations at once - “Novaya Gazeta Europe” and the educational project “Free University”. In addition to the main punishment, the court forbade the journalist for 3 years to administer sites.
Kirill Martynov said that he intends to appeal the verdict.
The Prosecutor General’s Office recognized the “new newspaper Europe” “unwanted” organization on June 28, 2023. The agency considered that the publication “carries out activities to create and disseminate tendentious information materials to the detriment of the interests of the Russian Federation”, and also disseminates “false information” about massive violations of rights and freedoms in Russia.
