The Spanish operator of the REE electric networks on Tuesday excluded the version of the cyber attack as the cause of Blackaut. According to REE, two power losses in the south-west of the country were recorded, probably at the solar power plants, which caused the instability of the energy system and led to a breakdown of the connection with France.
The Portuguese operator of the Ren network said that Blackout is caused by a malfunction in the Spanish power grid associated with a “rare atmospheric phenomenon”. It argues that due to extreme temperature fluctuations in Spain, “abnormal fluctuations” on very high voltage lines were recorded. The message also says that the full normalization of the network can last up to a week, Sky News reported .
According to the RBC investment bank, economic damage from shutdown can be from 2.25 to 4.5 billion euros. In the report, the bank accused the Spanish authorities of insufficient attentiveness to infrastructure in conditions of dependence on solar energy and insufficient batteries.
