The European Court recognized the illegal program of the "golden passports" of Malta. She was the last in the European Union

The European Court demanded that Malta close the program for issuing citizenship in exchange for investments, recognizing it violating European legislation. It is reported by Reuters.

The trial began in 2022 at the suit of the European Commission. The court considered the program of “golden passports” the undermining principle of mutual confidence between EU members, since thanks to this scheme, absolutely any person in exchange for € 1 million could get the right to live and work throughout the EU.

Malta remained the last country of the European Union, where the program “Citizenship in exchange for investments” operated. Previously, similar programs were closed by Cyprus and Bulgaria. Two days ago, the FINANCIAL Times issued an investigation that tells about 7 Russians who received the passports of Malta and later fell under sanctions for aiding war in Ukraine. After the start of a full -scale invasion, Malta ceased to give out “golden passports” to Russians and Belarusians.
