The White House is trying to put pressure on the Senate to soften the draft law on sanctions against Russia

The US Presidential Administration Donald Trump is trying to press the Senator-Republican Lindsay Graham and force him to mitigate the draft law on Russia. This is written by The Wall Street Journal.

As the publication clarifies, representatives of the White House in the last few weeks were unconquered with the Senator's office. They called him to soften some formulations in the impending bill on sanctions against Russia.

We are talking about sanctions that can be accepted if Putin does not go to negotiations, Graham said earlier. In addition to directly restrictions for Russian companies and citizens, 500 percent tariffs for imports from countries acquiring oil, oil products, natural gas or uranium were also provided.

Representatives of the Trump administration, in particular, proposed adding some exceptions and formulations to the document that would allow the president to choose who will fall under restrictions. For example, it was proposed to replace the word shall (“must”) with may (“maybe”) in the entire text of the bill.

Apparently, Donald Trump fears that such tough restrictions that were proposed can cause damage to his desire to restore dialogue between the United States and Russia.

One of the co -authors of the bill, the Senator from the Democrats, Richard Blumenthal, confirmed that there were private consultations with the White House about this initiative. He did not make their contents.

As WSJ notes, the fact that the administration asks to amend resonant bills in order to give more authority to the president is not surprising. However, the abolition of the obligatory nature of the sanctions will make the bill “toothless”, the interlocutors of the publication believe.
