The La Libertad Avanza Party of the Argentinean President Havier Miley last Sunday, September 7, was defeated by the elections to the legislative authorities in the largest election region of the country-the province of Buenos Aires. Both Miley himself and experts have already called this loss "crushing." In anticipation of the parliamentary elections in the country, the President’s party and his very situation are “much harder than before”.
The recently appeared La Libertad Avanza scored only about 34% of the vote, taking second place. The leader, following the results of the vote count, was the Left -Gentric Fuerza Patria, which received 47%. The opposition won in six of the eight constituencies included in the province of Buenos Aires. Itis considered one of the key elections, since almost 40% of the total number of voters of the country lives there.
Miley himself already called this result a “obvious defeat”, at the same time promising not to change his strategy and continue economic reforms in the country: “There will be no retreats in the government,” he said.
The loss of the party of Milea has several reasons. One of them is a corruption scandal into which the president’s government was drawn in late August. Milea Karina, the younger sister of the president’s office, was suspected of fraud with state contracts for the purchase of medicines for people with disabilities. The government and the president himself deny these accusations, and the country's national security minister said that the entire conflict was directed by people "associated with the Russian special services."
Mileya’s ratings, as the BBC local servicenoted , also undermined that his initiatives had not recently been voting in the Senate. Thus, the Senate rejected a number of presidential decrees aimed at reducing the state budget, on the contrary, approving the increase in education and healthcare. The president also reduced support in Congress .
Another reason for losing La Libertad Avanza is economic indicators . Having come to power, Miley promised to carry out quite radical reforms in the field of economics. However, if inflation in the country was more or less taken under control (annual inflation decreased from 214 to 118%), then the privatization and reduction of budget expenditures entailed the growth of unemployment and the fall in revenues. Many election promises of Milea were never fulfilled, a political scientist, professor of ICESI (Kalumbia, Colombia) Vladimir Ruvinsky , draws attention in a conversation with The Insider:
“Miles are no different from politicians like that, because he promised too much. Expectations from him were tall, but basically he was not able to do anything, ”the expert says. -In addition, squirrels begin to a greater extent inside Miley’s coalition due to the fact that those candidates that Miley put on these provincial elections did not justify hopes. And the internal struggle will intensify between those on whom Miley relied. ”
According to Ruvinsky, the loss of the Presidential Party in Buenos Aires is a signal to Miley that in the upcoming parliamentary elections in October "his situation will be difficult-and much harder than before." Due to the failure of the Party of Miley this weekend, the Argentine peso fell by almost 6% with respect to the dollar, and some international bonds have reached the worst indicators since 2020. This questions both the further support of the “midwife” president by the electorate and his economic course.
At the same time, as the interlocutor of The Insider, which occurred in the elections in Buenos Aires, was expected: Milea had “bad results here,” says Ruvinsky. “Only the level of Mileya’s loss was a surprise. It was more than expected, and it is not good for him, ”the expert summarizes.
