RKN recognized the blocking of FaceTime in Russia

Roskomnadzor acknowledged the limitations of FaceTime, Apple's calling service, in Russia. Gazeta.ru writes about this with reference to the department’s statement. Users have been observing interruptions in the operation of the application since the fall.

The RKN acknowledged the introduction of “restrictive measures” against FaceTime. They linked them to the fact that the service is used “to organize and carry out terrorist actions on the territory of the country, recruit their perpetrators, and commit fraudulent and other crimes against citizens.”

Problems with FaceTime calls in Russian regions began to appear since the beginning of autumn of this year. Users reported that they were unable to connect to calls from both the mobile Internet and Wi-Fi. They had no problems connecting to the network. Roskomnadzor did not officially comment on these messages at the time.

FaceTime is a calling service from Apple that allows iPhone, iPad, Mac users to call each other for free over an Internet connection.

Shortly before reports of interruptions in the application this fall, the State Dumaannounced that scammers had allegedly begun to actively use the service. Deputies then argued that the popularity of FaceTime grew against the backdrop of partial blocking of calls through WhatsApp and Telegram messengers, which RKN announced in August.
