Online cinemas have removed the Kazakh horror film “Cadet”

Online cinemas “Kinopoisk” and “Ivi” removed the horror film “Cadet” by Kazakh director Adilkhan Erzhanov. As the press service of Kinopoisk told Vorstka, the horror film was removed at the request of Roskomnadzor.

The representative of Kinopoisk did not specify the reasons for the department’s dissatisfaction, explaining only that according to the law, the online cinema was obliged to comply with the requirements within 24 hours.

The telegram channel “Commandant of the Cinema Fortress” was the first to write about the removal of the film from the Kinopoisk library on December 6. The post noted that the film was released on streaming on November 27; Kinopoisk itself called it one of its main releases. Later, as Vorstka noted, the film was also removed from the Ivy online cinema.

The director of the film, Adilkhan Yerzhanov, responded to Vorstka that he did not know about the official reasons for removing the film from Russian platforms. “Censorship, I didn’t like the film,” he suggested.

The horror film "Cadet" premiered in November 2024 at the Tokyo International Film Festival. The film is about a single mother who sends her son to a prestigious military academy, where he is bullied by his peers. In 2025 it was shown at the Berlin Film Festival. The horror film was supposed to represent Kazakhstan at the Oscars, but was withdrawn from the nomination due to the fact that its cinematographer Erkinbek Ptyraliev was part of the selection committee.

Previously, “Layout” talked about how, after the adoption of norms limiting the “propaganda” of LGBT people or childfree people, Russian censorship settled in the world of TV series . For example, the fifth season of the series Stranger Things was shown on Rutube and in cinemas, from which scenes about LGBT relationships were cut out. And the court recognized the scene with female masturbation in the horror film “ Black Ghosts ” as “non-traditional sexual relations.”
