Suspect of smuggling ammunition for Hamas detained in Berlin

At Berlin-Brandenburg Airport, 36-year-old Lebanese native Mohammed S., who arrived from Beirut, was detained. He was wanted by the Federal Criminal Police Office. Law enforcement officials claim that he is a member of the Hamas terrorist movement and is involved in arms smuggling. In particular, he allegedly acquired about 300 rounds of ammunition for attacks on Israeli institutions in Europe. Der Spiegel reports this.

Mohammed S.'s defense attorneys declined to comment. He is due to be transported from Berlin to Karlsruhe, where he will appear before the German Federal Constitutional Court.

This is not the first arrest in recent months in connection with cooperation with Hamas. In October, three men of Lebanese and Syrian origin were arrested in Berlin, two of them had German citizenship. They are also suspected of illegally purchasing weapons for terrorist attacks against Israeli and Jewish organizations. Law enforcement officers were able to catch them during a secret meeting with accomplices to transfer weapons. Among other things, they managed to seize a Glock pistol, an AK-47 assault rifle and several hundred rounds of ammunition. Another alleged smuggler was detained in November while trying to enter Germany from the Czech Republic.
