The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting on the situation around Iran after the attack by the United States and Israel, as stated on the UN website.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, at an emergency meeting of the Security Council, condemned the massive US and Israeli strikes on Iran, as well as retaliatory attacks by Tehran, which, according to him, violated the sovereignty of Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. He recalled the prohibition on the use of force enshrined in Article 2 of the UN Charter and called what was happening “a serious threat to international peace and security,” warning of the risk of uncontrolled escalation.
According to Israeli sources, the strikes hit 20 Iranian cities, including Tehran, Esfahan and Tabriz. The deaths of high-ranking officials, including Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and civilian casualties have been reported. According to Iranian media, at least 85 people were killed and many were injured as a result of an airstrike on a girls' school in Minab. An attack on a school in Tehran killed two people.
The country's airspace is closed, the Internet is almost completely disabled.
Iran, declaring the right to self-defense, attacked American targets in the region. A number of Gulf countries reported intercepting missiles, and a civilian was killed in the UAE due to debris. Against this background, reports appeared about the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Israeli data, 89 people were injured as a result of Iran's strikes on Israel.
France, on whose initiative the meeting was convened, condemned Iran's attacks on countries in the region and declared its readiness to defend its allies. Paris also pointed to a reduction in Tehran's cooperation with the IAEA.
Russia supported Iran, calling the actions of the United States and Israel “an act of aggression.”
US Ambassador Mike Waltz said Operation Epic Fury targeted Iran's missile and naval infrastructure to prevent it from acquiring nuclear weapons, and accused Tehran of supporting Hezbollah, Hamas and the Houthis.
Iran's spokesman called the attacks a violation of the UN Charter and asserted the "legitimate right of self-defense."
Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon said diplomatic options had been exhausted and the operation was aimed at preventing a “significant threat.”
Guterres called on the parties to immediately de-escalate and return to nuclear negotiations, noting that the recent round of indirect consultations brokered by Oman had not been completed.
